Hong Kong faced a tragic event recently as a massive fire engulfed a high-rise apartment complex, claiming at least 128 lives. The fire broke out in the afternoon on Wednesday and quickly spread from one tower to another, affecting seven out of the eight buildings in the Wang Fuk Court complex.

Over a thousand firefighters battled the flames for nearly 24 hours. Even two days later, smoke could still be seen rising from the charred remains of the buildings. As of Friday afternoon, authorities were wrapping up their search, but the possibility of finding more victims still loomed.
With a population of almost 4,800 residents in the complex — nearly 2,000 apartments — the scale of the disaster is overwhelming. Many of the casualties were elderly, and the complex itself was undergoing renovations to improve living conditions. Tragically, it’s reported that the construction work may have involved substandard materials that contributed to the rapid spread of the flames. Recent investigations have led to the arrest of three individuals connected to the construction firm, pointing to possible gross negligence.
A particularly worrying aspect of this incident was the discovery of flammable plastic foam panels on another building nearby. These panels were likely installed by the same construction team, raising safety concerns around ongoing renovation projects not only in this area but across Hong Kong.
Authorities plan to inspect other housing estates currently undergoing renovations to ensure safety standards are being met. Historically, this fire represents one of the deadliest in Hong Kong’s history, reminiscent of the 1996 Kowloon fire that killed 41 people and the devastating 1948 warehouse fire, which took 176 lives.
