Tragic Boat Capsizing Near New York City: Fourth Victim Presumed Dead

Three people have died, and one other is presumed dead after a boat sank off the coast of New York City on Sunday. The tragic incident involved a recreational fishing trip on a 30-foot vessel called the Grady White.

The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search at 6 p.m. Monday after unsuccessful attempts to find 52-year-old Vernon Glasford, who was the last missing member of the group. The boat sank about 5 miles southeast of Breezy Point, Queens, after taking on water around noon.

Captain Jonathan Andrechik of the Coast Guard expressed deep condolences to Glasford’s family. He noted how difficult it is to end a rescue operation, emphasizing that while the search has concluded, the support for affected families continues.

In the water where the incident occurred, temperatures were around 38 degrees Fahrenheit (3.3 degrees Celsius), posing additional challenges for those involved in the rescue efforts.

The Coast Guard, alongside New York City police, managed to recover five of the six individuals from the water. Unfortunately, four of them were unresponsive. The two hospitalized individuals were reported to be in critical but stable condition.

The extensive search covered about 842 square miles and required the use of helicopters, planes, ships, and small boats over a 30-hour period. This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise during seemingly simple boating outings.
