Tragic Boat Crash Near Clearwater Bridge: 1 Fatality and ‘Mass Casualty’ Declared by Florida Authorities

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — A tragic boat crash on Sunday claimed one life and left several others injured when a boat collided with a ferry near the Memorial Causeway Bridge and then fled the scene.

The Clearwater Police Department reported multiple injuries, prompting the Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department to classify the incident as a “mass casualty.” All those injured were on the ferry, which had over 40 passengers. Details about the deceased are not yet available.

After the crash, the ferry ended up on a sandbar just south of the bridge. Emergency crews evacuated all passengers and staff. Initial reports about the total number of injured individuals were not provided by the police.

Local hospitals have been alerted, and trauma alerts were activated. Helicopters were summoned to airlift two of the seriously injured to medical facilities.

Videos shared on social media captured the urgency of the situation, showing first responders racing to help with lights flashing. Authorities advised drivers to avoid the Memorial Causeway area as responders worked the scene.

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission have taken charge of the investigation into this incident. Understanding how boat collisions can occur is crucial, especially as boating safety measures grow in importance. A 2022 report from the U.S. Coast Guard indicates that nearly 5,000 accidents, resulting in over 600 deaths, were reported last year alone, underscoring the need for caution on the water.

This incident not only highlights the immediate risks but also serves as a reminder of boating regulations and the importance of responsible navigation to prevent future tragedies.
