Tragic Boating Accident Claims Lives of Three at Major League Fishing Event | CNN

Three people tragically lost their lives in a boating accident during a professional fishing tournament on Wednesday morning, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA). This incident occurred during the Major League Fishing (MLF) Tackle Warehouse Invitational on Lewis Smith Lake near Cullman, Alabama.

The crash involved two vessels around 7:03 a.m. One of the boats, a Center Console, was struck by a Nitro Bass Boat. Joey M. Broom, a 58-year-old from Altoona, was pronounced dead at the scene. Tragically, two other men, John K. Clark, 44, from Cullman, and Jeffrey C. Little, 62, from Brandon, Mississippi, were also thrown overboard during the collision and drowned.

ALEA stated that the crash happened near the Miller Flats area of Smith Lake and that their Marine Patrol Division is currently investigating. MLF confirmed the accident and expressed their support for those involved, stating they would not release further details until more information is available.

In the wake of this tragedy, competitor Flint Davis took to Instagram to share his thoughts and thank everyone for their prayers. He urged people to keep all affected families in their thoughts during this difficult time.

Kathy Fennel, MLF’s Executive Vice President, described the accident as heartbreaking and extended condolences to the families impacted by the loss. Following the incident, MLF has canceled the final day of the tournament out of respect for those affected.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, there were over 4,400 boating accidents reported in 2021, resulting in significant injuries and fatalities.
