Five people tragically lost their lives, including two children, in a serious crash early Friday on Interstate 95 in Stafford County, Virginia. More than 40 others were injured when a bus collided with several vehicles near a work zone.
The accident happened around 2:35 a.m. near the 146-mile marker, where the traffic was slowing down due to construction. According to the Virginia State Police, the bus failed to slow down and struck a Chevrolet Suburban. This led to a chain reaction involving an Acura and other cars.
All five victims were from Massachusetts. Four were in the Acura: a 45-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl, and a 7-year-old boy, all from Greenfield. A 25-year-old woman from Worcester was traveling in the Suburban that the bus hit.
The bus was operated by E&P Travel and had around 34 passengers headed from New York City to Charlotte, North Carolina. The driver, a 48-year-old man from Staten Island, was also injured, and police are investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash, with potential charges pending.
Responders faced a challenging scene with multiple vehicles on fire. Katie Brady, a spokesperson for Stafford County Fire and Rescue, stated they declared a mass casualty incident that day. They deployed 13 transport units and various rescue resources to manage the situation effectively.
Governor Abigail Spanberger expressed her condolences on social media, emphasizing her support for the families affected and thanking first responders for their urgent work.
