KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — A tragic accident on a highway in western Uganda claimed at least 46 lives early Wednesday morning. This incident is one of the deadliest in recent memory for the country. Initial reports from police suggested the death toll could be as high as 63, but they later corrected this, stating some victims thought to be deceased were actually still alive.
The crash involved two buses and two other vehicles near the town of Kiryandongo, where drivers, trying to overtake each other, collided head-on. This type of collision is disturbingly common in Uganda, where narrow roads and reckless driving contribute to high accident rates.
In 2024 alone, Uganda saw 5,144 road fatalities, a significant increase from previous years. Careless driving, especially aggressive overtaking, accounted for nearly 45% of these crashes. According to police, enforcing traffic rules is a major issue, particularly for heavy vehicles traveling at night. Joseph Beyanga, a road safety advocate, emphasized that poor enforcement leads to chaos on the roads. He pointed out that the recent tragedy underscores the need for a stronger push towards safer driving practices.
Irene Nakasiita from the Red Cross described the scene as horrific, with many victims suffering severe injuries. The absence of bystanders at night often delays assistance for those in need. Currently, most injured survivors are being treated at a nearby government hospital.
This tragic event has reignited discussions about road safety in Uganda, a country grappling with rising accident rates. According to Beyanga, initiatives to raise awareness and enforce road safety are crucial. His upcoming memorial walk, covering over 60 kilometers, aims to honor those who have lost their lives on the roads.
