Tragic Chemical Explosion at Longview Paper Mill: Injuries and Fatalities Reported

LONGVIEW, Wash. — A serious chemical explosion occurred at the Nippon Dynawave plant this morning, injuring multiple people and leading to some fatalities, according to local fire officials.

The Longview Fire Department (LFD) responded to the scene after an explosion involving a vat containing a corrosive chemical known as white liquor. This incident happened at around 7:18 a.m. Emergency teams are currently addressing the hazardous situation and advising residents to avoid Industrial Way and nearby areas.

White liquor, primarily made of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide, is crucial in the Kraft process of turning wood chips into pulp for papermaking. While essential in the industry, it’s extremely dangerous due to its high corrosiveness.

Reports indicate that several individuals have suffered critical chemical burns and other serious injuries, and they were taken to PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center in Longview and PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver for treatment. As of now, 10 people, including a firefighter, have been injured. Tragically, there has been at least one confirmed death linked to the explosion.

A representative from PeaceHealth mentioned that they received nine patients from the incident. One has died, two were transferred to other facilities, and the remaining six are in fair condition.

Fire officials also noted that some individuals remain unaccounted for, though the exact number is unclear.

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson shared his condolences and emphasized that state agencies are working closely with local teams to manage the situation. “My prayers are with the families of those lost in this tragedy,” he stated.

As this situation evolves, local firefighters, deputies, and hazmat teams continue their efforts on-site. Further updates are expected to shed light on the scope of the tragedy.

Data from the American Chemical Society shows that chemical incidents, while rare, can have devastating consequences, underscoring the importance of strict safety measures in industrial environments. Historical incidents, like the Bhopal disaster, highlight the far-reaching impact such accidents can have on communities and the environment.
