Among the victims was James Robert Dixon Jr., fondly known as “OG Frog.” Residents described him as a familiar face in the neighborhood. Witnesses painted a chaotic scene, recalling how the driver lost control, hitting a car before plowing through the crowd. “He never hit the brakes,” said James Baldwin, who was close to the scene and narrowly avoided being struck himself.
People have come together to honor Dixon, sharing stories that highlight his impact on the local community. Baldwin spoke of Dixon as a “legend,” emphasizing his connections to the neighborhood. Others joined in, expressing their sadness even if they didn’t know him personally. One resident, Destiny Artis, shared her mother’s memories of Dixon, recalling him as kind and never a troublemaker.
Debris from the crash is still scattered across the area, serving as a haunting reminder of the events. Baldwin commented, “It felt like an act of terror,” lamenting the rapid loss his community faced.
This crash follows another incident in Oakland just weeks earlier, where a driver similarly veered onto a sidewalk, injuring seven people, including a 15-year-old girl. Authorities apprehended two passengers connected to that incident.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrian fatalities have been on the rise, increasing by 46% over the last decade. This highlights a growing concern about road safety and pedestrian vulnerabilities.
