Tragic Collision Near Yellowstone: 7 Lives Lost in Pickup and Tour Van Accident, Authorities Report

BOISE, Idaho — A tragic collision between a pickup truck and a tour van near Yellowstone National Park has claimed seven lives and left eight others injured, according to Idaho State Police. The accident took place just before 7:15 p.m. on a highway close to Henry’s Lake State Park, roughly 16 miles from Yellowstone.

Following the crash, both vehicles caught fire. The driver of the Dodge Ram and six passengers in the Mercedes van died. The van was carrying a tour group of 14, and those who survived were transported to nearby hospitals.

Emergency teams, including air ambulances and paramedics, quickly responded to the scene, which is currently under investigation. The cause of the accident has not yet been revealed.

As of Friday morning, the Fremont County coroner had not identified the victims. Authorities are working on notifying the families before releasing any personal details about those involved.

Roger Merrill, 60, witnessed the aftermath of the collision while driving home. He described seeing flames engulfing the vehicles and bystanders attempting to assist those stranded outside the van. “It’s a very dangerous highway that leads to Yellowstone National Park,” Merrill noted, highlighting the heavy tourist traffic on this route.

Merrill also documented the scene, capturing video of the smoke billowing from the wreckage. “Help took longer to arrive than expected due to the remote setting,” he added, emphasizing the challenges of accessing the location quickly.
