The incident unfolded when Suzanne, 80, separated from her group while hiking. The ship departed without realizing she was missing. A search operation tragically found her body the next day. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is now investigating this incident alongside local police.

Mark Fifield, CEO of Coral Expeditions, announced the cruise’s cancellation—the decision was made in light of Suzanne’s passing and some previous mechanical issues the ship faced. Passengers will receive full refunds and assistance with their return travel.

Suzanne’s daughter, Katherine Rees, expressed heartbreak over the event. She noted her mother was active and involved in bushwalking. Katherine criticized the ship’s procedures, suggesting a failure to ensure all passengers were accounted for. A spokesperson for Coral Expeditions stated they were cooperating with the investigation, stressing their condolences to Suzanne’s family.

The Coral Adventurer, designed for remote excursions, generally accommodates up to 120 guests and 46 crew members. Incidents like these are rare, as cruise lines typically utilize systems to track passengers during debarkation and embarkation. Harriet Mallinson, a cruise expert, mentioned that standard operating procedures are designed to prevent such occurrences, indicating this is likely an unusual tragedy.
