Tragic Discovery: 9-Year-Old Missing from Road Trip Found in Utah

California Mother Arrested Amid Search for Missing Daughter

VANDENBERG VILLAGE, Calif. — Ashlee Buzzard, the mother of a missing 9-year-old girl, has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder. This comes after the tragic discovery of her daughter Melodee’s remains in a remote part of southern Utah, according to Santa Barbara County Sheriff-Coroner Bill Brown.

Authorities, including the FBI, made the arrest on Tuesday morning. They claim Buzzard took steps to conceal her actions, like positioning a rental car to avoid surveillance cameras at gas stations.

Sheriff Brown was clear during a press conference: “We have recovered a significant amount of evidence that points to Ashlee Buzzard as the perpetrator.” He stated that Melodee, who trusted her mother, fell victim to a “heinous crime.”

Buzzard appears to face charges in California, where investigators believe the plans to harm Melodee began. However, Michael Winn, Wayne County’s Attorney in Utah, indicated that charges may also arise in Utah as discussions unfold about the legal proceedings.

On December 6, a body believed to be Melodee was found near a road in the Caineville area. Authorities had been investigating her disappearance with Santa Barbara officials for weeks. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the identification to Melodee’s paternal grandmother, who expressed great sorrow after learning of the tragic news.

Melodee was last seen on October 9 when surveillance footage showed her at a rental agency with her mother. Buzzard was reportedly dressed in a hoodie and possibly wearing a wig to alter her appearance. Over the following days, the rental car traveled through multiple states—including Nebraska and Utah—before returning home without Melodee.

The girl was reported missing on October 14, not by a family member, but by a concerned school administrator. This unusual circumstance highlights growing concerns about child safety and the importance of timely reporting in missing person’s cases.

Recent statistics show that cases of missing children have increased, with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children reporting a rise in missing persons cases by nearly 15% in 2022. Such data emphasizes the urgency of community awareness and support in addressing the safety of children.

As the investigation unfolds, public interest remains high. Social media has seen a flurry of reactions, with users rallying for justice and support for Melodee’s family. The case serves as a painful reminder of the complex issues surrounding child safety and domestic relationships.

More updates are expected as the case progresses. For those interested in learning more about missing children issues, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children provides a wealth of resources and information.
