Police have reported the discovery of five skiers’ bodies near the popular Zermatt resort in Switzerland. A helicopter was dispatched to the Rimpfischhorn mountain area after climbers noticed abandoned skis at the summit on Saturday.
Authorities quickly found the bodies. They are in the process of identifying the victims and have opened an investigation. The Rimpfischhorn stands at 4,199 meters, just east of Zermatt and close to the Italian border. This mountain is well-known among backcountry skiers.
Air Zermatt confirmed that it carried out the rescue mission. After the alarm was raised by a group of mountaineers, rescuers found three bodies on an avalanche cone, where snow and debris had gathered. Two more were discovered about 200 meters above them on a small snow patch. The cause of death is still unknown.
Local police located the skiers on the Adler glacier after aerial and ground searches. Notably, earlier that day, Air Zermatt had faced challenging conditions during another rescue mission nearby. Strong winds and fog had stranded two mountaineers on the Fiescherhörner, which left rescuers unable to reach them initially. They eventually succeeded six hours later.
This incident comes about a month after heavy snowfall caused road closures and triggered avalanches in Zermatt. This popular ski destination, known for its stunning views of the Matterhorn, experienced extreme weather that left it temporarily cut off.
Statistics show that avalanche fatalities can rise sharply in regions with considerable snowfall. According to a report from the Swiss Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research, avalanche dangers increase significantly during and after major snowfalls. This emphasizes the importance of caution for mountaineers and skiers in backcountry areas.
While Zermatt offers breathtaking landscapes, it’s essential for outdoor enthusiasts to stay informed about weather conditions and avalanche risks. Social media trends show many skiers sharing safety tips and experiences, fostering a community of awareness in the face of such dangers.
As this case unfolds, the community watches closely, hoping to understand the circumstances surrounding this tragedy and ensure that safety remains a top priority in these beautiful yet perilous mountains.
