A former federal prosecutor was found dead on Saturday morning in Alexandria, Virginia. The Alexandria Police were called at 9:18 a.m. after reports about an unresponsive woman. They discovered 43-year-old Jessica Aber, who had served as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, deceased at the scene. Authorities have not disclosed if the home belonged to her or who notified them.
An investigation into her death is underway, with the Virginia medical examiner set to determine the cause. There are no additional details available at this time.
Aber was nominated by President Joe Biden in August 2021 and was unanimously confirmed by the Senate. She led the district for nearly three years before resigning when President Trump took office again in January. Her successor, Erik Siebert, expressed deep sorrow in a statement, labeling Aber as an extraordinary leader and mentor whose impact will be sorely missed. “We remain in awe of how much she accomplished in her all too brief time in this world,” he said.
Before her tenure as U.S. attorney, Aber began her legal career in private practice before joining the Eastern District of Virginia in 2009. She handled various roles, including assistant U.S. attorney, and deputy chief of the criminal division. As U.S. Attorney, she managed a team of around 300 people, overseeing cases affecting approximately six million residents.
Jessica Aber was a Virginia native and earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond. She received her law degree from William & Mary Law School in 2006.
