Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Authorities say they had likely been deceased for some time before their bodies were discovered.

Hackman, who was 95, was discovered in a mudroom, while Arakawa, 63, was found in a bathroom next to a space heater. Investigators also noted that there were prescription medications near her.
A spokesperson for the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed there were no signs of trauma or gunshot wounds on either of them. The investigation is ongoing, with the New Mexico Gas Company checking for any issues with gas lines in the house, as exposure to gas leaks can sometimes go undetected.
The local medical examiner has not yet determined the exact causes of death. Hackman, known for his remarkable acting career, was celebrated for his roles ranging from villains to heroes in various films. He won Academy Awards for “The French Connection” and “Unforgiven.” His passing comes just before the Oscars, prompting tributes from the film industry.
Hackman met Arakawa in the mid-1980s, and they moved to Santa Fe later that decade. Their home was a modest ranch-style house built in 2000, nestled on a hill with views of the Rockies.
Aside from his film career, Hackman authored three novels, the last being “Pursuit,” published in 2013. For years, he was a recognizable figure in Santa Fe, sometimes spotted around town, but he had largely stayed out of the Hollywood spotlight since retiring from acting.
Though Hackman had three children from a previous marriage, he and Arakawa had no children together. They shared a love for animals, especially their German shepherds.
In a 2020 interview, Hackman expressed that he and Arakawa enjoyed watching simple, low-budget films together. His legacy as a talented actor continues to inspire many, as the world remembers his contributions to cinema.
