Houston police recently discovered two bodies in local bayous, bringing the total for this year’s bayou-related deaths to 33, which is almost the same as last year’s total of 35.
On Monday morning, police received a call around 9:30 a.m. about a body in the Buffalo Bayou, near Crawford Street in downtown Houston. Officers from the dive team quickly attended to the scene. The second body was found nearby, along Brays Bayou at the intersection of Texas Spur 5 and Old Spanish Trail. Importantly, this body was located on the rocks, rather than in the water.
HPD Sgt. Michael Cass noted that the body found on Brays Bayou was severely decomposed, making it challenging for investigators to determine any details, including age. “Right now, there’s not a lot that we can see or determine,” he said. This raises questions about how the body decomposed so notably if it wasn’t submerged.
Autopsies will be performed by the Harris County medical examiner’s office, which is also working to identify the two deceased individuals.
So far this year, there has been increased attention on bayou-related deaths, especially after several bodies were recovered during a brief period in September. Local officials made efforts to reassure the public amid concerns of a potential serial killer.
