Tragic Dorm Incident: Two UW-Platteville Students Lose Their Lives in Targeted Attack

Two students from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Kelsie Martin and Hallie Helms, tragically lost their lives in an incident described by officials as “targeted and isolated.” Both were 22 years old and were involved in an event at Wilgus Hall on campus.

On Monday afternoon, a 911 call reported the situation just before 4 p.m. The police quickly determined there was no ongoing threat. Chief Joe Hallman noted that emergency personnel acted fast, advising the campus to shelter in place, which was lifted shortly after 5 p.m.

“This is an evolving situation,” said university spokesperson Christine Bellport. Authorities are currently investigating but have not released specific details about what transpired.

Sophomore Eric Sperduto, who lives in Wilgus Hall, shared his experience, noting he saw two women running from the building. “It’s just really sad to think about the families affected by this,” he said.

Chancellor Tammy Evetovich expressed her condolences in a statement, emphasizing the impact on the community. The university is providing counseling services this week for students and staff as they cope with the loss.

It’s important to recognize that mental health resources are vital in times of crisis. The stress of unexpected tragedies can weigh heavily on students, especially during finals week, which has been canceled to allow everyone time to heal.

In light of this incident, mental health experts stress the need for support systems on campuses. According to a recent study from the American College Health Association, nearly 60% of college students experience overwhelming anxiety. This situation highlights the importance of fostering a caring community where students can reach out for help.

The families of Kelsie and Hallie have been notified, and their memories will not be forgotten as the community comes together during this difficult time.
