Tragic Hostage Situation: Pennsylvania Gunman Blames Hospital for His Terminally Ill Wife’s Care | CNN

A tragic incident unfolded at UPMC Memorial Hospital in Pennsylvania when a man took the staff hostage. Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, 49, was distressed over his wife’s condition. She was on life support due to a terminal illness, and he felt more could have been done to save her.

Archangel-Ortiz was previously removed from the hospital after becoming upset about the lack of available treatment for his wife. It’s unclear if she has passed away, but his emotional state led to this unfortunate turn of events.

On Saturday morning, he returned to the hospital with a backpack containing a firearm, zip ties, and duct tape. He held several staff members hostage before police intervened, leading to a shootout where he was killed.

During this confrontation, he shot three police officers, including Officer Andrew Duarte from the West York Borough Police Department. Tragically, Officer Duarte did not survive; he succumbed to his injuries after being shot in the torso. His death has been ruled a homicide.

Officer Duarte, who was only 30 years old, left behind his girlfriend and family. A memorial service for him is scheduled at Living Word Community Church in Red Lion, Pennsylvania.

The shooting also left several hospital staff injured. An ICU doctor, a nurse, and a custodian were shot, while another employee was hurt in a fall during the chaos. Fortunately, they are now reported to be stable and recovering.

Thankfully, no patients were harmed during this incident, according to a spokesperson from UPMC Memorial. The situation is being thoroughly investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police along with the York County District Attorney’s Office. They have stated that further details will be revealed once the investigation is complete.
