WENATCHEE, Wash. — The search for Travis Decker, a former soldier wanted in connection with the tragic deaths of his three young daughters, has come to a somber conclusion. Officials confirmed this month that human remains found in a remote area of Grindstone Mountain are those of Decker.
The remains were located less than a mile from the campsite where the bodies of 9-year-old Paityn, 8-year-old Evelyn, and 5-year-old Olivia Decker were found in June. After more than three months of extensive searching, DNA tests have confirmed the identity of the remains. Sheriff Mike Morrison expressed his condolences to the girls’ mother, Whitney Decker, and highlighted the importance of resolving the case to honor her daughters’ memory.
Travis Decker had been experiencing severe mental health issues, leading to concerns from his former wife about his stability. She had sought legal restrictions on his visitation rights before the tragic events unfolded. On the day the girls were meant to return home, Decker failed to bring them back. A deputy found his truck shortly afterward, along with the bodies of the girls. Autopsies revealed that they had been suffocated.
Decker served in the Army, with a deployment to Afghanistan in 2014. He had survival skills that enabled him to live off the grid, which made the search even more difficult. More than 100 personnel from various agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service, participated in a massive search operation. A reward of up to $20,000 was offered for information about his whereabouts.
