Five people, including a suspect, have died after a violent incident in Gig Harbor, Washington. According to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), this tragedy unfolded due to a violation of a protection order.
The chaos started around 8:41 a.m. when police received a call about a man at a home despite a no-contact order against him. The deputies were on their way to serve the order but learned at 9:30 a.m. that the man was now stabbing people outside.
Witnesses reported seeing at least one victim attacked in broad daylight in front of others. Shortly after, deputies arrived and exchanged gunfire with the suspect. Officer Shelbie Boyd, a spokesperson for the Pierce County Force Investigation Team, stated that shots were fired at 9:33 a.m., and the suspect, a 32-year-old man, was shot and pronounced dead.
Initially, three adult victims were found dead at the scene, and a fourth, who was critically injured and taken to the hospital, later succumbed to their injuries. The identities of those involved have not been released, and it’s unclear what their relationships were with the suspect.
This incident raises questions about the effectiveness of protection orders. According to a report by the National Center for State Courts, about half of all protective orders are violated. Many people are unaware of the protective measures available to them, which only highlights a critical area of awareness and support in domestic situations.
