Tragic Incident: Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Deputy Killed While Responding to Crash

A Miami-Dade sheriff’s deputy was tragically shot and killed during a traffic incident near Kendall on Friday afternoon. Deputy Devin Jaramillo, just 27 years old, had responded to a crash when he was unexpectedly attacked.

Witnesses say a struggle broke out, and unfortunately, Jaramillo was shot. Reports suggest that the suspect later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities haven’t released the suspect’s name or confirmed if they were armed.

Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz expressed her heartbreak over the loss, calling it an unacceptable act of violence. She praised Jaramillo not just as a deputy, but as a son and friend. Jaramillo had recently graduated from the police academy in May 2024, fulfilling his dream to serve his community.

In a show of support, hundreds of first responders gathered outside HCA Florida Kendall Hospital as a motorcade escorted Jaramillo’s body to the medical examiner’s office. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue even raised an American flag in tribute.

Mayor Daniella Levine Cava shared her condolences, emphasizing that the entire community is mourning this heartbreaking loss. Prior to his role with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, Jaramillo served as an officer in Coral Gables for nearly four years. Coral Gables Police Chief Ed Hudak remembered him for his dedication and bravery.

This devastating event highlights the risks law enforcement officers face daily. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 2022 saw a 16% increase in officer fatalities compared to the previous year, emphasizing that the dangers of the job are higher than ever. It’s a reminder of the sacrifices these public servants make for our safety.

As the community rallies together, both officers and civilians reflect on what Jaramillo’s service meant to them. Such tragedies bring to light the bond that exists amongst law enforcement, beyond just jurisdictional lines. During difficult times, they remind us that they stand together in grief and solidarity.
