Two men lost their lives and three others were severely injured when a driver lost control of his vehicle on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. This unfortunate incident occurred on Friday evening at around 6 p.m. on Amsterdam Avenue, near West 109th Street.
According to police reports, the driver was heading northbound on Amsterdam when he collided with parked cars, including a gray Volkswagen and a brown minivan. He then veered off the road and struck five men who were near a barbershop.
The driver, a 61-year-old man, was detained by police and is suspected of driving under the influence. Tragically, a 35-year-old and a 46-year-old man were pronounced dead at the scene. The other three men are currently in critical condition and receiving treatment at St. Luke’s Hospital.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic. One observer recalled, “I could tell immediately that one person was struggling for life.” Footage captured on cellphones showed strangers trying to lift the heavy vehicle off a man trapped underneath.
“It’s horrifying,” said another witness. He shared that the community is small, and many know each other. The loss feels deeply personal as many hold connections to the victims.
Neighbors mentioned that the men struck by the vehicle were mostly gathered outside a local barbershop when the incident occurred. Those inside the parked minivan, possibly two men, declined medical assistance.
As the community processes this tragedy, the ongoing investigation will help shed light on what led to this disaster. According to recent statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving fatalities have been a rising concern, prompting discussions about road safety measures across the country.
In light of recent events, experts are calling for both stricter enforcement of DUI laws and increased public awareness campaigns. Ensuring public safety on the roads remains a critical issue, especially in bustling urban areas like Manhattan.
Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy as the investigation unfolds.
