A University of Kentucky student-athlete has been arrested following the tragic death of her infant. Laken Snelling, 21, faces charges of concealing the birth, tampering with evidence, and abuse of a corpse. She was taken into custody on August 31 and later released on a $100,000 bond, currently under home confinement. Snelling has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
On August 27, police responded to a report of an unresponsive infant at Snelling’s residence. Upon arrival, they discovered the baby, who was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Police have identified Snelling as the child’s mother, although the coroner has not yet determined the cause of death.
Snelling is a senior at the university and part of the STUNT team, a competitive cheerleading group. According to a recent survey, nearly 20% of college students report experiencing high levels of stress, which can sometimes lead to poor decision-making in critical situations. This incident highlights the pressures that young adults can face, especially those balancing academics and athletics.
Reports indicate that the infant was found in a closet, wrapped in a towel and placed inside a black trash bag. Investigators claim Snelling confessed to cleaning up after the birth and concealing the infant’s body.
Her next court date is set for September 26. As this case unfolds, it raises discussions about mental health support for college students and access to resources during crisis situations. The importance of open conversations around these issues cannot be overstated, especially in academic environments where stress is prevalent.
