An American Airlines plane crashed into a military helicopter in Washington, D.C., resulting in multiple fatalities. This tragic incident occurred just before 9 PM local time as the plane was nearing Ronald Reagan National Airport. There were 64 passengers on the jet and three soldiers in the helicopter.
So far, authorities have recovered 27 bodies from the plane and one from the helicopter. They fear there are no survivors left. This accident marks the most significant civil aviation disaster in the U.S. since 2001.
Among the victims was pilot Johnatan Campos, who was confirmed deceased by his family. Kiah Duggins, a passenger well-loved for her accomplishments, was also on board. In a statement, her parents expressed their grief and asked for privacy during this difficult time.
Tragically, the crash impacted the figure skating community profoundly. At least 14 athletes were believed to be aboard the flight. One young skater, 12-year-old Olivia Ter, was a promising talent who had just participated in a youth development camp in Kansas. Her death was confirmed by local officials, who recognized her potential and legacy within the sport.
Additionally, the Skating Club of Boston identified several skaters from their organization on the flight. This included athlete Jinna Han and her mother, Spencer Lane and his mother Christine, along with coaches Vadim Naumov and Yevgenia Shishkova, both former world champions in pairs skating. The loss of these individuals has sent shockwaves through the skating community.
The figure skating association expressed deep condolences, stating, “We are devastated by this unspeakable tragedy and hold the victims’ families closely in our hearts.” Among the victims was also Inna Volyanskaya, a former Soviet skater and a coach in Washington, D.C.
As investigations into the incident proceed, both the Pentagon and the Army have started inquiries. More than 300 first responders are contending with harsh weather conditions to recover and assess the crash site.
While many mourn the loss of their loved ones, it is a reminder of the unpredictability of life and the impact such tragedies have on close-knit communities.
