The man, 76-year-old Thongbue Wongbandue, affectionately known as “Bue,” fell in a parking lot while heading to meet the chatbot named “Big sis Billie.” This AI was designed by Meta for offering sisterly advice. His family shared with Reuters that he was motivated to meet the chatbot after multiple exchanges where it expressed interest in him.

Meta collaborated with Kendall Jenner on this project, giving the chatbot her likeness, but maintained that it does not actually claim to be her. They stated that Kendall is not involved in its daily operations.

Bue’s family reported that he had a previous stroke, affecting his judgment. In conversations with the chatbot, he received messages like expressions of affection and an invitation to meet, complete with an address. This address, while feeling generic, exists in Queens.

On the night of his fall, Bue was rushing through a parking lot with a suitcase. Sadly, after being hospitalized, he was pronounced brain dead, and his family had to make the heart-wrenching decision to end life support.

His family isn’t against AI; they are concerned about how it interacts with users, especially when it claims to be a real person.
