Tragic Killing of Loyola Student at Rogers Park Lakefront: Suspect Charged, Police Report

ROGERS PARK — A tragic shooting last week in Rogers Park has led to the arrest of a 25-year-old man in connection with the death of 18-year-old Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman.

Jose Medina has been charged with murder. Police report that Gorman was shot early Thursday while she was socializing with friends at Tobey Prinz Beach. The incident has sent shockwaves through the Loyola community and local neighborhoods.

Authorities identified Medina as a Venezuelan national who had previously been detained by Border Patrol. He lives near where the crime occurred. The Department of Homeland Security has filed a request to keep him in custody, hinting at possible deportation issues.

At about 1:30 a.m., Gorman and her friends were on the beach when a masked man approached and opened fire. Tragically, Gorman was hit while trying to flee and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Gorman was a freshman in Loyola’s business program and active in campus charity and religious organizations. Friends fondly remembered her at a vigil, highlighting her welcoming nature and infectious smile. “She was always the first to hug you and the last to let go,” said a faculty member who knew her well.

Her mother, Jessica Gorman, expressed deep sorrow and called for justice, saying, “We need answers. We need accountability.”

In addition to murder, Medina faces charges for attempted murder, aggravated assault, and illegal possession of a weapon. His court appearance is scheduled for Monday.

This incident reflects broader issues of gun violence in Chicago, where statistics reveal alarming rates of shootings in recent years. A report by the Gun Violence Archive found that in 2022 alone, there were over 3,000 shooting incidents in the city, raising concerns about safety, especially among students and young adults.

The community is now grappling with questions about safety and accountability, as reactions pour in on social media. Many expressed their grief and anger, using hashtags related to justice for Sheridan and community safety.

As law enforcement continues to investigate, the hope is that this tragedy will lead to meaningful discussions on gun control and community safety moving forward.
