Tragic Lake Tahoe Boating Accident Claims Lives: DoorDash Executive and Family Among Victims

A recent boating tragedy at Lake Tahoe has left the community stunned. Eight people, including a DoorDash executive and his family members, lost their lives in a capsizing incident on Saturday.

Joshua Antony Pickles, 37, the global head of strategic sourcing at DoorDash, was among the victims. His parents, Paula Bozinovich, 71, and Terry Pickles, 73, also died in the accident. Other victims included family and friends who were enjoying a day out on the lake, celebrating a birthday.

The group had set off on Pickles’ boat, which he purchased just a year ago. Unfortunately, they encountered sudden rough waters. Waves reached heights of up to 8 feet, and strong winds over 35 mph caused the boat to take on water, ultimately leading to its capsizing.

According to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, ten people were on board when the boat capsized near D.L. Bliss State Park. While two individuals were rescued and hospitalized, eight bodies were eventually recovered. The search for the last missing person concluded on Monday.

DoorDash expressed their heartbreak over the loss. They described Pickles as a source of inspiration, noting that his upbeat spirit touched everyone he met. His family has been deeply affected by the tragedy. His wife, Jordan Sugar-Carlsgaard, mentioned the overwhelming pain they are experiencing. “We lost my loving husband, his parents, Uncle Peter, and friends in this tragedy,” she said.

Boating accidents aren’t just unfortunate; they highlight the importance of safety awareness. A recent report from the U.S. Coast Guard shows that boating fatalities have increased in recent years. In 2021, there were 658 boating deaths, a 14% rise from the previous year.

Experts suggest that understanding weather conditions before heading out is crucial. “Safety should always be the priority,” says boating safety instructor Lisa Thompson. “Knowing when to turn back is essential, especially in unpredictable weather.”
