CHICAGO — Ofelia Giselle Torres Hidalgo, a 16-year-old fighting stage 4 Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, has sadly passed away after a long battle with cancer. This heartbreaking news comes just a few days after a judge ruled in favor of her father, Ruben Torres Maldonado, who had faced detention by immigration authorities.
Ruben was taken into custody outside a Home Depot in Niles on October 18, the same day Ofelia returned home from the hospital. Her struggle with cancer was tough, but she found strength in her father’s presence when he was released.
“We enjoyed the little moments together,” Ofelia said before her passing. “Just watching movies and eating. I am so happy to have him back.”
Three days before she died, Ofelia was present via Zoom during her father’s immigration hearing, celebrating his conditional victory for a pathway to permanent residency. This ruling was crucial, as it acknowledged the significant hardship his deportation would cause for his U.S.-citizen children.
Kalman Resnick, the attorney representing Ruben, described Ofelia as “heroic and brave,” and said her fight against ICE’s detention served as an inspiration.
