NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The campus of Southern University of New Orleans (SUNO) was filled with sorrow recently. Students, faculty, and community members gathered for a candlelight vigil in memory of Caleb Wilson, a student who tragically died after a hazing incident in Baton Rouge on February 27.
Even those who never met Caleb showed up to honor him. Local ministers, students, and residents came together to support his grieving family and remember a bright young man whose life ended too soon.
“What happened is just so senseless for someone with such a promising future,” said Joyce Tillie, a New Orleans resident at the vigil. “No parent expects to bury their child—this must be incredibly hard for his family.”
During the vigil, mourners sang together and lit candles, reflecting on Caleb’s impact in their lives. The university reminded students that counseling and support resources are available as they navigate their grief.
One speaker at the vigil captured the sentiment well, saying, “Caleb’s time with us was far too brief, but his legacy will endure. We will honor him by supporting one another and living with the same passion and purpose that he did.”
Caleb was a student at the Baton Rouge campus of Southern University. His passing, linked to a hazing ceremony, has sent shockwaves across the entire university and beyond. Authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
Statistics show that hazing remains a prevalent issue on campuses. According to a 2020 study by the Stop Hazing organization, about 55% of college students involved in clubs, sports, and organizations reported experiencing hazing. This highlights the need for universities to promote safer, more inclusive environments.
Caleb’s funeral is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Pilgrim Baptist Church in Kenner. His story serves as a reminder of the severe impact of hazing and the importance of community support during tough times.
