MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Beloved R&B singer Angie Stone has tragically passed away at the age of 63. She was in a vehicle returning to Atlanta from Alabama when it flipped and was struck by a large truck. Music producer Walter Millsap III shared that everyone else in the van survived the crash.
Stone, known for her hit “Wish I Didn’t Miss You,” was set to perform at a halftime show during the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball championship that day. CIAA Chaplain Pastor Jerome Barber led a moment of silence at the game, expressing the sadness felt by all.
CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams-Parker expressed heartbreak over the loss. She said, “Angie used her incredible talent and presence to inspire us with strength and hope.” Stone’s music touched many hearts, and her impact will be remembered.
Stone rose to prominence in the early 2000s, blending R&B with neo-soul sounds. She produced several hit songs, including “No More Rain (In This Cloud)” and “Baby,” a collaboration with soul icon Betty Wright. Her albums, like “Mahogany Soul” and “The Art of Love & War,” received significant acclaim.
Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone helped establish The Sequence, an all-female group that recorded the influential song “Funk You Up.” This made her one of the first women to succeed in rap music. After her time with The Sequence, she joined Vertical Hold before launching her successful solo career.
In addition to her music, Stone showcased her talents in acting, appearing in films like “The Hot Chick,” “The Fighting Temptations,” and “Ride Along.” She also starred on Broadway in “Chicago” and participated in reality shows that displayed her personal journey.
