Tragic Loss: Idaho Family Mourns Autistic Teen Fatally Shot by Police

Victor Perez, a 17-year-old with autism and cerebral palsy, was shot by police in Pocatello, Idaho. His aunt, Ana Vazquez, shared that the family decided to take him off life support after he was declared clinically brain dead.

A vigil is planned for Saturday evening outside the hospital to honor Victor. Pocatello’s Mayor, Brian Blad, expressed sadness over the incident and acknowledged the grief it has brought to the community.

On April 5, 2025, officers responded to a report of someone armed with a knife near North Harrison Avenue. They used lethal force shortly after arriving, shooting Victor as he approached them with the weapon. Eyewitness videos reveal that the officers fired just 12 seconds after exiting their vehicles, raising questions about their decision-making and lack of attempts to de-escalate the situation.

The police chief, Roger Schei, commented in a video statement that while they are aware of the circulating footage, a thorough review of all evidence is necessary to understand the full context.

The community’s reaction has been one of outrage and sorrow. Many are questioning why the police didn’t attempt less lethal methods or negotiations, especially considering Victor’s condition.

A study from the American Psychological Association in 2022 revealed that individuals with disabilities are disproportionately affected by police violence. This incident highlights an ongoing issue regarding how law enforcement interacts with vulnerable populations.

As the investigation continues, feelings of mistrust are growing. “It’s sad because the police are supposed to help us,” Vazquez told CBS News. “If they can’t protect us, who will?”
