Tragic Loss: Kool & the Gang’s Michael Sumler Passes Away at 71 in Car Crash

Michael Sumler, known to fans as “Chicago Mike,” was a cherished member of the iconic R&B group Kool & the Gang. Sadly, he passed away at 71 after a car accident in Cobb County, Georgia, over Memorial Day weekend.

The band expressed their sorrow in a statement, mentioning how Mike worked with them from 2004 to 2015. His role evolved from stylist to onstage performer. Sumler not only dressed the band but also energized performances with his dance moves and background vocals. He was instrumental in events like the LeKool champagne launches, showcasing his diverse contributions.

In the wake of his tragic death on May 25, Mableton’s mayor, Michael Owens, paid tribute, calling Sumler a music legend. “The City of Mableton joins his friends, family, and fans in mourning this loss,” he said. This sentiment was echoed by many in the music community, highlighting the impact Sumler had on friends and fans alike.

Sumler joined Kool & the Gang after a member of their security team saw him perform in Chicago. Initially, he was styling the group, but his talent quickly led him on stage. “Once they saw that I could do other things, they asked me to join,” he recalled in a 2018 interview. He became involved with the band’s opening dance number and eventually sang background vocals, helping to create a vibrant show experience.

Kool & the Gang, famous for hits like “Get Down on It” and “Celebration,” has a rich history in music, winning two Grammy Awards and seven American Music Awards. They also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. Robert “Kool” Bell is the last surviving member of the original lineup.

As music lovers reflect on Sumler’s contributions, they also recognize the band’s lasting legacy. The R&B genre continues to thrive, influencing new artists, and Sumler’s spirit will resonate with fans for years to come. His journey serves as a reminder of the connections formed through music and the joy it brings to millions.
