Oklahoma State University announced that Maj. John “Alex” Klinner, a former student, tragically lost his life in a plane crash in Iraq on March 12. The crash involved a KC-135 refueling aircraft, taking the lives of six U.S. service members. Klinner graduated from the Spears School of Business in 2025.
The university shared its condolences on social media, emphasizing the impact of his service. They extended thoughts and prayers to his wife, Libby, and their young children during this difficult time.
The U.S. Department of Defense identified the other victims of the crash:
– Capt. Seth R. Koval, 38
– Capt. Curtis J. Angst, 30
– Tech Sgt. Tyler H. Simmons, 28
– Capt. Ariana G. Savino, 31
– Tech Sgt. Ashley B. Pruitt, 34
Koval, Angst, and Simmons were part of the 121st Air Refueling Wing in Ohio, while Klinner, Savino, and Pruitt served with the 6th Air Refueling Wing. This incident occurred in Turaibil while the aircraft was on a combat mission. Reports indicate that although it was a combat situation, the aircraft was flying over friendly territory.
The KC-135 is crucial for the U.S. Air Force, acting as its main aerial refueling aircraft. General Dan Caine mentioned that the cause of the crash is still under investigation, and no further details are available.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth honored the service members, describing them as “American heroes.” This event resonates deeply within military circles and among families of service members, sparking discussions on social media about the dangers faced by those serving abroad.
