New York: A tragic incident unfolded in Albany, where a second Indian national, Anvesh Sarapelli, has sadly passed away following a devastating house fire. His death came just a day after fellow victim Sahaja Reddy Udumala succumbed to severe injuries from the same event.
The Indian Consulate in New York expressed its sorrow over this loss, stating, “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family during this difficult time.” They are in touch with Sarapelli’s family to offer support.
On December 4, firefighters and police responded to a report of a fire near Quail Street, where they found four individuals trapped inside. Both Sarapelli and Udumala were then transported to Albany Medical Centre and later moved to the Westchester Medical Burn Centre for intensive care.
Sadly, both victims did not survive their injuries. The Albany Police reported that the residence was fully engulfed in flames, highlighting the severity of the situation.
To assist with funeral costs and other related expenses, a GoFundMe campaign was started by Udumala’s cousin, Rathna Gopu. Gopu described the loss as an “unimaginable tragedy” for the family. Udumala was just 24 years old and studying for her master’s in Albany. She suffered burns on nearly 90% of her body and fought bravely until her last moment.
This incident is particularly heartbreaking given the rise in house fires across the U.S. Statistics show that in 2022, there were around 353,000 residential fires, which led to over 2,700 fatalities. Awareness and safety measures are crucial to prevent such tragedies. Fire departments regularly advise residents to check smoke detectors and have an escape plan in place.
Such stories resonate on social media, with users sharing their condolences and highlighting the need for better fire safety education. Fires can spread quickly, and having a plan may save lives.
