Tragic Loss: Washington GK Hamant Passes Away at 21 After Battle with Cancer

Mia Hamant, a talented goalkeeper for Washington’s women’s soccer team, has tragically passed away at the age of 21. Her university confirmed that she died from kidney cancer.

In 2024, Mia stood out as one of the best goalkeepers in the Big Ten. She achieved an impressive 0.66 goals against average, marking one of the lowest in her program’s history. Unfortunately, she had to sit out her senior season after receiving a Stage 4 kidney cancer diagnosis in April.

Mia’s uplifting spirit inspired everyone around her. Her coach, Nicole Van Dyke, highlighted Mia’s joy and courage, saying she empowered her teammates even during difficult times. “Mia made us all better people,” Van Dyke stated.

In a show of support, the entire Washington athletic department rallied around Mia during her fight. After the Huskies’ victory over Illinois, wide receiver Denzel Boston spoke about the team’s commitment to supporting her through her struggles, emphasizing the tight-knit atmosphere of the program.

Just two weeks before her passing, Mia attended a game and even sounded the siren at Husky Stadium, a testament to her love for the sport and her team.

Social media reactions reflected the deep impact Mia had on her community. Washington Athletics tweeted: “We are heartbroken by Mia’s passing… Her legacy will forever live in Husky Athletics.” The Big Ten also honored her with the 2025 Sportsmanship Award, recognizing her strength and character.

Moreover, athletic director Pat Chun expressed how Mia embodied the ideals of a Husky student-athlete, noting the profound influence she had on those around her.
