Fauja Singh, known as the “Turbaned Torpedo,” was a remarkable runner. He lived to be 114 years old, believed to be the world’s oldest marathon runner. Tragically, he passed away after a hit-and-run accident in his village near Jalandhar, Punjab.
Local reports stated that Singh was walking when he was struck by a vehicle. He was rushed to the hospital but didn’t survive his injuries. News of his death was confirmed by his running club and charity, Sikhs In The City. India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, honored Singh, recognizing him for inspiring many young people to embrace fitness.
In 2011, Singh made headlines when he became the oldest person to run a marathon at the age of 100 in Toronto. However, Guinness World Records did not officially recognize this achievement due to a lack of verified documentation. Singh had a British passport confirming his birth date of April 1, 1911, but Indian officials stated no records were kept that year.
Singh began running later in life, at age 89, to cope with deep personal loss. After the tragic death of his son, who died in a freak accident, he moved to London to live with another son. It was at this point that he found joy in running, participating in local events organized by the Sikh community. Inspired by a marathon on TV, he decided to run his first marathon in 2000.
Over the years, Singh completed multiple marathons, achieving his personal best time of 5 hours and 40 minutes in Toronto in 2003. His last race was at the age of 101, when he finished the Hong Kong Marathon’s 10K in just over 1.5 hours.
