Three people lost their lives, and 14 others were injured in a mass shooting at Buford’s bar on West 6th Street early Sunday. Authorities reported that the suspect was shot and killed by police at the scene.
The Austin Police Department (APD) received the first call about the shooting at 1:58 a.m. Witnesses say the suspect drove around the area in an SUV before using a pistol to fire at patrons outside the bar. He later exited the vehicle and switched to a rifle, shooting at people as he walked along the street.
APD officers arrived quickly, responding to reports from the nearby East 6th Street entertainment district, and confronted the suspect at an intersection. They shot him to stop the threat.
Medics arrived within a minute, treating 17 victims in total. Sadly, three were pronounced dead at the scene, while the others were taken to local hospitals, three of whom suffered critical injuries.
The FBI is now involved in the investigation, working closely with APD. So far, there’s no clear motive, but preliminary findings suggest a possible link to terrorism, according to the FBI. They are employing specialized teams to gather evidence.
Local leaders quickly reacted to the tragic event. Representative John Bucy III expressed his heartbreak for the victims, pointing out the ongoing challenge of gun violence in America. He and other officials called for stricter measures to prevent such tragedies.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson praised the rapid response of first responders, stating their actions likely saved many lives.
