Tragic N.C. Plane Crash: Pilot’s Daring Attempt to Avoid Turtle on Runway

MOCKSVILLE, N.C. — Recently, a small plane crashed near Sugar Valley Airport due to an unusual situation involving a turtle on the runway. According to a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the pilot raised a wheel during landing to avoid hitting the turtle.

The crash occurred on June 3, and it resulted in the tragic deaths of the pilot and one passenger, while another passenger suffered serious injuries. The pilot of the Universal Stinson 108 landed about 1,400 feet down the 2,424-foot runway when a communications operator, watching from the airport office, alerted him about the turtle.

After the pilot raised the right main wheel to clear the turtle, the communications operator heard him throttle up. Sadly, the plane soon left the operator’s sight, and moments later, a witness who was mowing grass at the end of the runway reported seeing the wings rock back and forth before the plane took off again. The plane ended up in a heavily wooded area about 255 feet from the runway. It caught fire but remained largely intact, although it came to rest on its left side with damage to the wings.
