New Delhi: The Indian government recently reported that 26 Indians have died while serving in the Russian armed forces, with seven others currently missing. Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, provided these updates to Parliament, highlighting ongoing efforts to repatriate 50 more individuals.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has been actively involved, assisting in the return of the remains of 10 deceased Indians and facilitating the local cremation of two. For those reported dead or missing, DNA samples from family members have been shared with Russian authorities to help establish identities.
Since 2022, concerns have risen about the safety of Indian nationals in the Russian military. Currently, 202 Indians are believed to have been recruited by the Russian armed forces. Efforts from the government have already led to the early discharge of 119 individuals.
“Once mortal remains reach a safe location, DNA matching is crucial for identification,” Singh explained. After confirming identities, the embassy aids families in the necessary arrangements for cremation or transport back to India.
