A devastating fire at the Pulse nightclub in Kočani, North Macedonia, has left at least 59 people dead and over 100 injured. The tragedy unfolded around 3:00 a.m. local time on March 16 during a concert by the local pop group ADN. Sparks from pyrotechnics ignited the blaze, leading to chaos as concert-goers tried to escape.

Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski shared the grim details in a press conference, stating that the injured were rushed to hospitals, including some in the capital, Skopje. Many suffered from severe burns. Some of the event’s organizers were also among the seriously injured.
Toshkovski announced that an autopsy will be performed on the deceased to confirm their identities. He vowed that those responsible for the tragedy will face justice, stating, “Everyone who made a mistake will bear responsibility.”
Rescue teams could be seen on footage from the scene, battling the flames and helping victims. Health Minister Arben Taravari assured that medical teams were working diligently to care for the injured. Although he did not disclose specific conditions, he noted that foreign aid was unnecessary at this time.
As the investigation continues, police have arrested one man and detained several others, including some event organizers. The Public Prosecutor’s Office is also involved in the ongoing investigation.
This tragic incident is one of the worst in recent history for North Macedonia, prompting heartfelt responses from leaders and officials. Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski expressed deep sorrow on Instagram, saying, “This is a difficult and very sad day for Macedonia.” Meanwhile, Marta Kos, the European Commissioner for Enlargement, expressed her condolences on X (formerly Twitter), saying she is “deeply saddened by the tragic fire.”
Tragedies like this raise important questions about safety in public venues. Recent data from the National Fire Protection Association highlights that over 1,000 people die each year in the United States alone due to fire-related incidents in various types of buildings, including nightclubs. The importance of proper safety protocols and fire regulations can’t be overstated.
As the investigation progresses, the hope is that lessons will be learned to prevent such disasters in the future.
