Two lives were lost, and ten others were injured in a tragic shooting at the Westminster Apartments in Amarillo, Texas, early Saturday morning. Police responded to several gunfire reports around 2 a.m. When they arrived, they found one male victim dead on the scene, and nine others were rushed to the hospital, five of whom were critically injured. Sadly, one of these victims succumbed to their injuries later.
The Amarillo Police Department identified one deceased victim as 17-year-old Ezekiel Rudy Almazan, and the other was a 16-year-old boy. The incident seems to have stemmed from a confrontation involving a group of youths who moved from a nearby party to the apartment complex. Reports indicate that some individuals asked to leave the original gathering followed the group to the apartments and began firing weapons indiscriminately.
According to police, they suspect multiple firearms were involved, based on cartridges found in the area. A Glock 9mm handgun was discovered on a landing outside one of the apartments, but no suspects have been arrested yet. Authorities have urged residents in the Belmar area to review their doorbell camera footage for any unusual activity during that time.
This incident is part of a disturbing trend in Amarillo, as it comes just weeks after another weekend of violence left six people dead and ten more injured in four separate shootings on March 22.
