At least 37 people lost their lives, and many more were injured when a bus fell into a 200-meter (650-foot) ravine in Peru. The tragic accident occurred early Wednesday on a particularly rugged section of the Pan-American Highway in the southern region of Arequipa.
Local reports indicate that the bus, carrying around 60 passengers, collided with a pickup truck while rounding a curve. After the impact, the bus veered off the road and plunged into the Ocoña River below.
Bus accidents are all too common in Peru, especially at night and on mountainous roads. Experts highlight that factors like poor road conditions, speeding, and inadequate signage contribute to these deadly incidents. The bus was operated by the Llamosas company and was traveling from Chala to Arequipa. Waldor Llerena, the mayor of Ocoña, noted that the area has a tragic history of similar accidents, making it a hazardous route for travelers.
Health officials confirmed that 36 people died at the scene, while one more succumbed to injuries in a local hospital. Twenty-five others, including three minors, are currently being treated for injuries sustained during the crash.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident, and the driver of the pickup truck has been detained.
