Tragic Sailboat Collision in Miami Claims Life of Third Girl: What Happened?

Miami’s sailing community is grieving after a tragic incident left three children dead following a collision between a sailboat and a barge in Biscayne Bay. The accident occurred on July 28, around 11 a.m., near Monument and Hibiscus Islands.

In total, five girls, aged 7 to 13, and a 19-year-old woman were thrown into the water during the crash. Sadly, two of the girls were declared dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, with another girl, just 10 years old, passing away days later.

Petty Officer Nicholas Strasburg of the Coast Guard reported that the sailboat sank beneath the barge after the collision. “It is with heavy hearts that Coast Guard investigators announce the passing of the 10-year-old child that was in critical condition,” the agency shared in a statement.

The Miami Yacht Club expressed deep sorrow over the incident. They noted that the community is profoundly affected, stating, “Our hearts are broken for these families.” The organization, along with the Miami Youth Sailing Foundation, is committed to supporting those impacted by this tragedy. “This is a tragedy that has touched not only the sailing community but everyone who cherishes our Bay and the young lives who brought such joy to it,” they added.

The Coast Guard is conducting a thorough investigation, collaborating with officials from Argentina, as one victim was from there, and the Chilean National Maritime Authority has also been invited to join the inquiry. Following the accident, all individuals involved in the tug, barge, and sailboat tested negative for drugs and alcohol.

This incident brings to light the dangers of boating, especially for children. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, 4,291 boating accidents were reported in 2020, resulting in 2,633 injuries and 767 fatalities. It’s essential to prioritize safety, particularly when young ones are involved.

As the sailing community mourns, they continue to reflect on the joy sailing brings to many, especially children in summer camps like the one the victims were attending. This heartbreaking event serves as a reminder of the importance of safety and community during such difficult times.
