A tragic shark attack occurred Thursday morning at Kylies Beach in Crowdy Bay National Park, Australia. A woman lost her life, and a man suffered serious injuries while swimming. They were both in their mid-20s and were known to each other.
Emergency services were called around 6:30 a.m. A bystander helped the injured man while waiting for paramedics. Sadly, the woman died at the scene, but the man was airlifted to a hospital and is in serious but stable condition.
Police Chief Inspector Timothy Bayly stated that shark attacks on multiple people are extremely rare. Gavin Naylor, an expert from the University of Florida’s shark research program, echoed this sentiment, noting that one shark attacking more than one person is unusual. He suggested further investigation to understand the shark’s behavior.
The shark responsible was identified as a large bull shark. In response to the incident, authorities deployed drumlines—baited hooks—to catch the shark, while surrounding beaches were closed for safety.
