Two people have lost their lives, and six more are receiving medical care after a tragic shooting at Florida State University (FSU) in Tallahassee. The victims were not students, as confirmed by campus police.

The alleged shooter, 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, is reportedly an FSU student. He sustained injuries during the incident and is currently in the hospital. He is the son of a Leon County sheriff’s deputy, and one of the firearms found at the scene was a service weapon previously owned by his mother, Jessica Ikner, who has served as a school resource officer for 18 years.

Reactions to the shooting have poured in from local leaders and officials. Former President Donald Trump described the event as a "shame" during a meeting with Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis expressed his condolences, stating, "Our prayers are with our FSU family, and state law enforcement is actively responding."

In light of the shooting, FSU has suspended all classes and canceled sports events through the weekend. The campus’s emergency alert system quickly notified students, advising them to seek shelter.

Students shared their harrowing experiences. Ava Arenado mentioned that a classmate received the alert and informed everyone around. Another student, Blake Leonard, initially mistook the gunfire for construction work until he saw others fleeing in panic. He described hearing multiple rounds of shots, which prompted his decision to run for safety.

This incident is a grim reminder, as FSU has faced similar violence before. In 2015, a graduate injured three people in a library shooting before police fatally shot him.
