Tragic Shooting at Florida State University: Gunman Claims 2 Lives and Injures 6 Others

At Florida State University (FSU), a tragic shooting occurred recently, leaving two people dead and six others injured. The incident took place on the campus in Tallahassee, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. Students received alerts urging them to “shelter in place” shortly after the shooting was reported.

By 3 p.m., authorities announced that the threat had been neutralized. However, nine buildings remained cordoned off as crime scenes. The alleged shooter has been identified as Phoenix Ikner, a current student and the son of a local deputy. Sheriff Walter McNeil revealed that Ikner had access to his father’s handgun, which was recovered from the scene.

Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare shared that it had admitted six patients due to the incident—one in critical condition and others in serious condition. As news spread, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis offered his prayers to the FSU community, emphasizing the state’s commitment to handling the situation. The FBI is also providing assistance with the ongoing investigation.

In a somber note, Reid Seybold, a senior studying political science, recounted the chaos from his classroom. He described the fear felt by students as they waited for police to ensure their safety. “I feel so like … I don’t have any agency, which is the scariest thing for me,” he shared.

Following the incident, FSU canceled all classes and events, focusing on the well-being of its students and staff. The university community expressed a strong resolve against violence on campus, with statements insisting that no student should ever feel unsafe in their educational environment.
