LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. — A tragic shooting at Lincoln University has left one person dead and six others injured. This incident occurred during homecoming festivities at the historically Black university on Saturday night.
Gunfire broke out around 9:30 p.m. outside the International Cultural Center, where students and alumni were celebrating with tents and activities after a football game. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with people scrambling for safety.
Authorities have detained one individual with a firearm and are investigating the possibility of multiple shooters. However, Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe assured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the campus.
“We’re still piecing together what happened,” he said. “It doesn’t seem like this was an attack aimed at causing mass harm.”
The university is located about 45 miles southwest of Philadelphia. As officials look into the incident, they are particularly eager to receive any video footage from attendees to aid their investigation.
Victim identities and their medical conditions remain confidential at this time. Chester County detectives, alongside state police and the FBI, are handling the investigation.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his concern on social media, stating he had been briefed on the situation and offered support to the university community. He asked others to join him in keeping Lincoln University in their thoughts and prayers.
Lincoln University Police Chief Marc Partee emphasized the sorrow within the community, which was supposed to be a day of celebration. “We are devastated,” he remarked.
This incident sheds light on a wider issue of gun violence on college campuses. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been over 600 mass shootings in the United States in 2022 alone. This increasing trend has raised concerns among students and families about safety during campus events.
