Tragic Shooting at University of New Mexico Dorm: One Dead, One Injured, Suspect Apprehended

A tragic shooting at the University of New Mexico has left a 14-year-old dead and another person injured. The incident happened early Friday morning at the Casas del Rio dormitory complex, where four individuals were playing video games. An 18-year-old suspect allegedly opened fire for reasons that are still unclear.

According to New Mexico State Police Chief Troy Weisler, the deceased was found in the dorm after police received reports of gunshots at around 1:36 a.m. A 19-year-old man later arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound, claiming he had been shot on campus. The authorities took over the investigation shortly after and apprehended the suspect later in the afternoon.

In her statement, UNM President Garnett S. Stokes expressed deep sadness over the incident, highlighting the need for counseling services for students, faculty, and staff. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the loved ones affected by this tragedy,” she said.
