Federal authorities are looking into a recent shooting involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Ontario, California. This incident marks the second shooting in just over a week as ICE operations ramp up across the state.
On Thursday morning, ICE officers conducted a vehicle stop around 6:30 a.m. in the 2800 block of Vineyard Avenue. While they were focused on a target vehicle, an unrelated driver stopped in front of them, leading to a series of tense moments. ICE officials reported that the driver attempted to reverse toward the officers, prompting one of them to fire shots in defense. The driver fled the scene, leaving behind the vehicle.
Family members later identified the driver as Carlos Jimenez, a 24-year-old U.S. citizen, who was on his way to work at a food bank when the shooting occurred. After being shot in the shoulder, he was taken to the hospital by his wife and subsequently taken into custody.
His older brother expressed disbelief at the situation. “I don’t think he would do anything aggressive,” he said, adding that Carlos is known for helping others. Witnesses in the area reported hearing multiple gunshots and the screeching of tires that morning.
Javier Hernandez, the executive director of the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice, noted that the presence of heavily armed agents in communities raises concerns and fear.
