Tragic Thunderstorm Capsizes Tourist Boat in Vietnam: 34 Lives Lost

HA LONG BAY, Vietnam — A tragic incident unfolded on Saturday afternoon when a tourist boat capsized during a sudden thunderstorm, resulting in the loss of 34 lives, according to state media. Eight others are still missing.

The boat, named Wonder Sea, was carrying 48 passengers along with five crew members, all Vietnamese, during a sightseeing tour of Ha Long Bay, a favored destination for tourists. Rescue efforts managed to save 11 individuals, but the search continues for the missing. Initially, authorities reported 12 rescues but later corrected the number.

The capsizing was attributed to severe winds. Among the survivors was a 14-year-old boy who was rescued after being trapped for four hours inside the overturned boat.

Most of the passengers were from Hanoi, including around 20 children. This tragedy highlights the risks associated with boating, especially during inclement weather. Experts suggest that even well-known tourist spots can become hazardous when weather conditions change suddenly.

Interestingly, a recent study by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism revealed that over 80% of tourists are unaware of the safety measures related to boating in areas prone to sudden storms. This underlines the need for greater awareness and safety training for both tourists and operators.

Meanwhile, a tropical storm, Storm Wipha, is forecasted to approach Vietnam’s northern coast, bringing further concerns about safety in the region.
