Tragic Toll: 32+ Palestinians Lose Lives in Gaza Amid IDF Fire on Food-Seeking Crowds

At least 32 people lost their lives and over 100 were injured when Israeli soldiers opened fire on Palestinians gathering for food in southern Gaza. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with claims that the Israel Defense Forces shot “indiscriminately” at crowds of mostly young men near aid distribution centers supported by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).

Most fatalities occurred in the Teina area, close to a GHF site. Medical officials reported that many of the wounded are in critical condition, with children and teenagers among the casualties. The Nasser hospital in Khan Younis was overwhelmed, receiving 25 bodies and numerous injured individuals. Dr. Atef al-Hout, the hospital’s director, warned the situation is dire, lacking essential medical supplies and personnel.

GHF, which aims to provide humanitarian aid in Gaza, stated there were no incidents at their distribution sites, asserting that the violence happened outside their operational hours. Meanwhile, the Israeli military claimed they fired warning shots at a group approaching their troops, stating they are looking into the reported casualties.

Eyewitnesses recounted a terrifying experience. Mahmoud Mokeimar described a massacre, stating that soldiers fired upon the crowd as they pleaded for food. Akram Aker said the troops used machine guns, with the shooting starting in the early hours.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is severe. Over 2 million Palestinians are facing potential famine. Just last week, 19 people died in a stampede near a GHF site, highlighting the chaos during aid distribution.

Dr. Mohamed Saker, a nursing director at Nasser hospital, reported many victims had severe injuries. He expressed that the hospital’s resources are insufficient for the continual influx of casualties.
